Class Notes Spotlight - Congratulations Alex and Stephan, Class of '09

Stephan Dalkie and Alex Smith both started at Greenwood as Grade 9 students in the Class of 2009; they first met on Fall Outdoor Education during the first couple weeks of school. They started dating years later, in 2018. 

 

Alex and Stephan married in 2024. Surrounded by family and friends – many of whom they met at Greenwood – the pair said their vows in July at the Broadview Hotel in Toronto.

 

e-Evergreen caught up with Stephan and Alex to hear a little more about their beginnings and how Greenwood helped to shape their journey.

 

We both started at Greenwood in Grade 9 and would have met up at outdoor education during the first two weeks of school.

 

Alex: That Stephan was good at soccer and very smart. Both still hold true.

 

Stephan: Alex has always been very good looking and that was definitely the first thing I noticed about her. 

 

Alex: I had the opportunity to travel to Kenya on a Greenwood trip in the summer between Grades 10 and 11. I am so grateful for having had that experience and look back on that trip with such great memories.  

 

Stephan: The sports! We had some great teams and had a lot of fun. And on behalf of Alex, another favourite memory of mine is when she quietly got the top mark in the class on our Grade 12 calculus exam. It burst a few bubbles that day!

 

Alex: I am willing to try anything at least once, and I think part of that comes from my time at Greenwood. I wouldn’t have considered myself super adventurous in grade school but getting out of my comfort zone during camping trips, trying new sports and even participating in play in French class (with neither acting nor French being my strong suit) really encouraged me to always be open to trying new things.

 

Stephan: I was lucky to have a few really great teachers who have had a lasting impact for me. They pushed me to be better and to set high expectations (especially Ms Rigby - now Ms Thomas, Greenwood’s Principal, Head of School), and taught me a lot about perspective and the importance of giving back. 

 

We got married on July 27 of last year at the Broadview Hotel.

 

Our favourite part about the wedding day was having our family and close friends there to celebrate with us. Six of the eight friends/family in our wedding party were also students at Greenwood so it was special to celebrate with people who we’ve known for so long and share so many great memories with. Another highlight from the night were the various speeches throughout dinner. Maddy, Zoe, Brendan and Dan (all from the class of ’09) all did an absolutely amazing job. There was no shortage of good speech content with 15+ years of stories to pull from!
