Students in Grades 9 -12 recently had the opportunity to hear from alumni, parents/guardians and Greenwood staff at our annual Careers Morning.
Speakers represented a wide range of fields, including business leadership, healthcare, creative services, engineering and more.
Careers Morning is held at the start of the course selection period each year to help provide Greenwood students an opportunity to speak with working professionals and consider their options for life after high school. Speakers share their educational and career trajectories and experiences, and tips or lessons they learned along the way.
Elora Colbert ‘27 attended the Investment and Entrepreneur sessions and found the sessions informative in outlining what it takes to pursue those careers.
“I learned that success does not only require day-to-day skills but also strong character traits and the right mindset,” she said. “The speakers highlighted that if you don’t know what career you want to pursue, you should explore fields related to your interests to discover potential career paths. For example, how one might enjoy performing in the school play, which has skills commonly found in being a public speaker – I found this advice especially helpful as someone who is still uncertain about my future career direction.”
Elora found it particularly interesting that so many Greenwood alumni returned to speak at Careers Morning. It demonstrates how the Greenwood community supports each other, she said.
“It felt like a ‘full-circle moment’ to see graduates who once walked these same halls now thriving in their chosen fields. Seeing their success gave me hope and excitement for my own future career path,” Elora said. As a student ambassador, she helped the speakers find their classrooms and that provided even more opportunity to chat with the guests.
“One alumni who was a real estate agent shared that he never expected to enter the field but discovered his passion for real estate through experiencing different careers,” she recalled. “I found this lesson valuable because it showed me that career paths can change over time, and our interests may evolve as we gain more experiences.”
For Wendy Herod, Greenwood’s Director, Guidance & Postsecondary Counselling, Careers Morning provides students access to the unique paths and experiences people have as they land upon their careers.
“I hope that hearing from professionals in different industries helps our students feel inspired and curious about the options and opportunities available to them,” Wendy said. “A huge thank you to all of our alumni and parent/guardian speakers who so openly shared their stories and answered questions from our students.”
