Greenwood’s Got Talent: Greenwood’s First-Ever Battle of the Bands

Tihmily Li, Communications Officer
On February 10, the Greenwood community had a very special treat at Community Time. Instead of the usual Greenwood Mic, the Arts Committee organized a fun, competitive Greenwood’s Got Talent where different musical groups signed up to perform. There were even guest judges who made a surprise appearance – “Heidi Klum” (Sloane Basch ‘26), “Howie Mandel” (Charlotte Hounsome ‘25), “Sharon Osbourne” (Carter Murphy ‘26) and “Simon Cowell” (Charlie Waghmare ‘25) took time out of their busy schedules to provide fun commentary.

Here are the groups that competed at this Battle of the Bands and the songs they covered:

Creep by Radiohead performed by Nirbanana (Kasey Codilla ‘27, Carter Murphy ‘26, Ander Smith ‘27 and Elliot Veneziano ‘29)

Sarah's Place by Zach Bryan performed by The Swivelling Turtles (Cooper Gregory ‘25 and Charlie Waghmare ‘25)

Where is My Mind by The Pixies performed by The Jens Lindemann 5 (Mr. Brown, Ms. Leo, Mr. Piasetski, Mr. Ruston and Mr. Stubbs)

Summer of ‘69 by Bryan Adams performed by the The Bechdel Test (Guitar Club members Mel Edgell ‘25, Phoebe Gregson ‘25, Charlotte Hounsome ‘25, Mason Kohler ‘26, Lucy Lapowich ‘25, Kalina Mehta ‘25, Nicole M ‘26 and Danielle Tylman ‘25)

Kiss Me by Sixpence None the Richer performed by Kasey Codilla ‘27, Ella Roland ‘27 and Ander Smith ‘27

Banana Pancakes by Jack Johnson performed by the Grad Girls Band (consisting of Kylie Armstrong ‘25, Daniella Barmak ‘25, Mel Edgell ‘25, Siena Farnell ‘25, Alexa Fiorelli ‘25, Greer Fitzpatrick ‘25, Phoebe Gregson ‘25, Charlotte Hounsome ‘25, Lucy Lapowich ‘25, Allegra Mariani ‘25, Julia McLennan ‘25, Kalina Mehta ‘25, Evelyn Mezzetta ‘25, Becky Opashinov ‘25, Ainsley Parker ‘25, Claudia Schmid ‘25, Danielle Tylman ‘25 and Nikita Wood ‘25)

Much like Canada’s Got Talent, students and staff had the opportunity to vote for their favourite performance after the show. The top three bands (as voted by the school community) are:
  • In third place, Nirbanana.
  • In second place, The Bechdel Test.
And in first place – drumroll please! –
  • The Swivelling Turtles.

Congratulations to the winners and thank you to all who participated. It’s clear to all that Greenwood has definitely got talent!

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
