Get to Know Your Clubs & Committees: The Exceptionality Awareness Club

Tihmily Li, Communications Officer
At Greenwood, there are more than 40 clubs and committees that students can join. At the beginning of the year, students and staff can propose new clubs that reflect new areas of interest such as STEM, debate or model United Nations. This series will cover clubs and committees that showcase the wide range of co-curricular activities here at Greenwood. For this month, we’re highlighting the Exceptionality Awareness Club.

The Exceptionality Awareness Club is a fairly new club, formed last year by Kylie Armstrong ‘25 and Greer Fitzpatrick ‘25, whose aim is to raise awareness of individuals with differing abilities and to make Greenwood a more accessible space. In their inaugural year, the Club made some amazing achievements! The club participated in the Dance-a-thon in support of Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital where they raised $4,000. Members also wrote pen pal letters for Best Buddies International, created bracelets to raise awareness and promote the club, and earned their AODA certification.

Moving to the new school year, the club hopes to bring new initiatives this year. Thanks to the club’s efforts last year, Greenwood is now listed as a co-organizer with St. Clement’s School for the Holland Bloorview Dance-a-thon with the school goal to raise $5,000. The club invited Monika Myers, Canada’s first model with Down’s Syndrome, to speak at Greenwood last year. Based on the reception from Monika’s talk, the club is also eager to bring more guest speakers this year to Greenwood.

Interested in taking part in the Exceptionality Awareness Club’s initiatives? Come by their meetings on Wednesdays at lunch in the SSC!

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
