Congrats to Jacob Mackey ‘27, winner of provincial alpine ski finals
Congratulations to Jacob Mackey ‘27 who recently won the Alpine Skiing OCup Provincial Finals in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario.
Jacob took a few moments to answer some questions for Life @ Greenwood and shared the excitement with his classmates too.
When did you start skiing?
I started skiing when I was two years old.
Can you tell us a little about the Championships you won over the March Break?
Yes, I won the Alpine Skiing OCup Provincial Finals in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. I then went on to the Eastern Canada Finals in Collingwood with Charlie Pepper ‘27, Jack Broughton ‘27, Nathan Marsh ‘27 and Tiggy Chapman ‘27. Due to the results at Easterns, Charlie, Jack, Tiggy and I qualified for the Whistler Cup, and I was named to Team Canada. This was an amazing experience, skiing and training with athletes and coaches from across the country.
What do you like most about ski racing?
My favourite thing about ski racing is having the opportunity to ski in different places all over the world.
Do you have any advice for other student athletes for balancing school and sport?
My advice for student athletes who are balancing school and their sport is to keep teachers informed about when they will be out of school and to try to get ahead of tests and assignments. I am lucky that my teachers have been so helpful and accommodating in my schedule.
What's up next for you?
Next year I plan to continue skiing as a FIS (International Ski Federation) athlete, which will be a big challenge for me.
Please join us in congratulating Jacob on this achievement. Well done also to those who competed in the Whistler Cup last week!
We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
