Students Test Their Fitness at University of Guelph Physiology Lab

Carla DiFilippo
In the Human Anatomy Laboratory, our students had the privilege to learn anatomy using human body donors. Studying the structures of the human body in this environment is unsurpassed by any other learning tool. Students explored the structures and functions of the muscular-skeletal system, nervous system (spinal cord, nerves and brain), cardio-respiratory system and finally the urinary/reproductive system. The specimens in the Human Anatomy Laboratory have come from people who have graciously donated their bodies for the betterment of science and education and thus granted us an immeasurable privilege. For that we are very thankful.

After the Human Anatomy Laboratory, we traveled to the University of Guelph Physiology Laboratory Testing. Here students had the choice to complete three physiological tests: The maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) test, Maximal Anaerobic Power (Windgate) test and a body composition test. We learned about the different energy pathways and how each pathways is used for different sports and training.

Overall it was an amazing day of learning!

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
