Congratulations to Matt Kaul ‘21 on receiving the Frank H. Sobey Award for Excellence in Business Studies!
We briefly caught up with Matt to learn more about his Greenwood experience that led him to pursue a Business Degree at Mt. Allison University.
While at Greenwood, Matt was originally set on pursuing a post-secondary education in medicine. He credits Ms. Floras, his science teacher, for encouraging him to explore this avenue. His high school co-op at a downtown hospital provided a great opportunity to learn more about the medical field; it was eye-opening and helped him realize it was not the right career path for him, he says.
After his co-op, Matt decided to change gears and leaned into Greenwood’s Business Program. “The availability of unique business courses allowed me to explore my interests,” he said. Matt gives a shout out to Mr. Vachon and Ms. Pasut for being impactful teachers who helped shape his Greenwood experience. Most notably, he recalls how “Ms. Robson’s Econ class set me up for success at university”.
Matt’s involvement in DECA at Greenwood strengthened his presentation and public speaking skills and helped bring him out of his comfort zone, he says. It was great preparation for Mt. Allison’s presentation-heavy Business Program.
“I came to Greenwood in Grade 7 as a shy student,” Matt recalls. “Over the years, the school helped build my confidence and bring me out of my shell”.
Matt would like to share this advice with the leaving class of 2025 as they close out their high school chapter and embark on new adventures:
“For those going to post-secondary education: get involved on campus earlier on in your university career. Join a club or society that interests you and put yourself out there. Start networking - get on LinkedIn, connect with Greenwood Alumni, and don’t be shy to ask questions”.
Matt is set to graduate Mt. Allison this spring. He’s looking forward to his move back to Toronto from Sackville, New Brunswick, and we can’t wait to see all that he continues to accomplish!
