YPI Winners Secure Grant for Charity

Tihmily Li, Communications Officer
Congratulations to Grade 9 students for their outstanding participation in the Youth Philanthropy Initiative (YPI).

Greenwood’s Grade 9 Service Learning programming involves participation in YPI, a program that generates better youth engagement and awareness of issues in their community. Groups create a presentation advocating for a local charity and $5,000 is awarded to the charity with the winning presentation. At the beginning of the year, Grade 9 students form small groups and select a local charity to research and contact. The students later work on their presentation in their Advisor meetings. Finalists from each Grade 9 Advisor group were then selected to present on May 16 to determine which charity would receive the YPI grant.

Six finalist groups presented their charity to a panel of judges consisting of Greenwood staff, students and a YPI representative. The groups spoke about organizations that tackled gender-based violence and youth homelessness. The winning team, Ali Khosrowshahi ‘27, Fred LaFlamme ‘27 and Liam Myers ‘27 presented about the Kennedy House, a Scarborough-based charity that supports at-risk youth by providing housing and educational programming to help youth break the cycle of poverty.

Thank you to all the students who championed various charities throughout the year!

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
