Learning through Teaching

When school ends at Greenwood, cast members of the junior musical hurry to rehearsals in the music rooms and in the theatre. In these rehearsals, you may also find a Grade 11 or 12 Musical Theatre student giving a suggestion for acting or conducting a 1-on-1 singing session. For the junior musical this year, members of the senior Musical Theatre class have stepped in as assistant singing coaches and directors as part of their curriculum. 

This experiential learning experience has provided an enriching opportunity for our senior students to learn through teaching their younger peers. 

“This experience has really given me better insight on how much work it takes to organize and direct the cast,” said Evan Edgell ‘24 as he provided coaching assistance for a particular musical number. “Sometimes when I’m at home, I’ll make a little note about how to direct or teach this part next time.”

“It’s also nice to learn material from another production,” added Mel Edgell ‘25. “This role also makes you consider elements of the musical that you may not have previously.” 

With the support from senior Musical Theatre students Fin Burke ‘24, Evan Edgell ‘24, Mel Edgell ‘25, Evie Ohlson ‘24 and Sophia Stieber ‘25 as directors and vocal coaches, the cast of The Addams Family have improved by leaps and bounds. While Ms. Leo or Ms. Borden works on directing a scene with more cast members involved, a senior student can spend time with a smaller group or individual to refine their line delivery, acting or singing.
