The month-long experiential Shad program offers students in Grades 10 and 11 the opportunity to live and study at one of 20 participating universities during the summer while working in a team on a project using STEAM and entrepreneurship guidelines. Interested students apply in late November and early December, and accepted applicants receive their placement in April. This summer, five Grade 11 students and one Grade 10 from Greenwood will partake in the Shad program. Here’s where they’re going and what they’re most excited about:

I am going to Memorial University in St John’s, Newfoundland! I was very excited when I learned I will be going to Memorial. I have never been to Eastern Canada, but I hear that it is beautiful. A friend of mine from Crestwood did the Shad program last year and they did a lecture all about conducting an autopsy, which he said was really cool. We will also participate in a bunch of recreation activities, including having the chance to explore St. John’s. I am excited to hear what my topic will be and see what ideas my team can come up with. Most of all, I think the program will give me a really good idea of what university will be like. It is kind of like a trial run, without the pressure of tests and exams! I expect (and hope) that I will learn a lot and have a lot of fun doing it.

I am going to the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton. At Shad, I am excited to meet people from all over Canada who are interested in STEAM and entrepreneurship. I am also excited to participate in lab seminars, where we get to do "hands-on" learning and hear from experts in their fields.

I am going to UPEI in Prince Edward Island. I am super excited to be on my own. It'll be the second time I am travelling by plane alone, and I'm so glad to (finally) be away from my family, and it will give me a chance to experience what it's like to be a student at university, which is only a couple short years away for me. I also heard that there is an AMAZING ice cream place called "Cow's Creamery" based in PEI, and since I'll be away from my family... It's going to be awesome!

I am attending the Shad program at the University of Calgary in July. While I am excited to explore the city of Calgary, the Shad program is a great program for making new connections and strengthening your collaborative skills. In addition, I have heard that there are many opportunities at Shad for both personal and team growth – many of which I hope to take advantage of. I am excited for this program, not only because it will be beneficial for my learning, but also because it will allow me to embrace the sense of community that the program involves.

I will be at Thompson Rivers University in British Columbia. I'm excited to experience all the off-campus activities and the beautiful landscape around campus.

I will be at Toronto Metropolitan University for the Shad program. I am most excited to spend time with students who might share different STEM interests from mine. This way I can explore different areas of STEM, both from the program and from my peers.
Wow, what an amazing opportunity! Congratulations to all Greenwood’s Shad participants. We can’t wait to hear how the summer goes!
We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
