There’s something a little different about the Lodge this fall, and at first it might be hard to pinpoint why.
But take a closer look - or listen - and you’ll discover that with mobile devices out of sight, students are looking up, chatting, joking and playing around more than last year.
Since September 2024, a new mobile device protocol sees Greenwood as a device-free zone from 8:30 a.m to 3:30 p.m. Students have been provided with supportive technology from Yondr - lockable phone pouches - to support them in our transition to being a device-free school.
Teacher Ty Barbieri says he’s noticed a difference when on duty in the Lodge.
“I looked around and every table was full, with students chatting and getting to know their peers, and it’s been really amazing to see and hear,” he said. “I can see already that this change will be great for community-building and friendships.”
As shared with our school community in the spring, our aim is to promote and support a healthy habit change with respect to mobile devices. There are many reasons for this, including:
There are strong links between social media consumption and mental health concerns.
There is increasing literature indicating that technology addiction is becoming more and more of a concern globally.
Greenwood aims to encourage positive interactions online between students while teaching about digital citizenship. Students need to be on the Greenwood network in order to assist students in this learning.
Greenwood strives to foster positive relationships between its students, and in concurrence with the above points, recognizes that cellphone use can be detrimental to the creation of positive social bonds and meaningful relationships.
For Tony Costa, Vice Principal of Student Support and Wellbeing, the first few weeks of school have shown early signs that taking the steps to go device-free and providing the supportive technology to do so will have a positive impact on student learning and relationships.
“The energy when you walk through the building is palpable; it’s different,” Mr. Costa said. “It’s really lovely to see students interacting with each other in the Lodge or at the community puzzle, and really engaging with their peers in classes.
“We want to help bring about a habit change that alters the relationships with our mobile devices and improves overall wellbeing.”
It’s a move that demonstrates Greenwood’s commitment to its Strategic Plan, said Heather Thomas, Principal.
“It supports student well-being: staying away from social media without fearing that they are missing out, being able to focus on their peers and school without distraction,” she said. “It supports Belonging: building community, as Mr. Costa and Mr. Barbieri noticed. And, it demonstrates a smart use of technology: Supporting students to stay smart-device free throughout the day with the use of Yondr pouches.”
