Closing Message for 2022-2023

Thank you to all who joined us at last week’s Celebration Day festivities! It is only as I reflected on the past year to write my Celebration Day address that I realized what a truly PACKED year it was. We had lots of “catching up” to do after several years of reduced programming, and I have been delighted to see our students take advantage of our full school programming, from musicals to sports to field trips to service learning programming and everything in between. Celebration Day and Graduation were a truly celebratory and inspiring way to end the school year.

This year, we say farewell to a number of Greenwood staff members who are moving on to new opportunities in service of their personal and professional goals. Kathryn Connelly, Erin Porter, Kate Raven and Janelle Watson have taken on positions that offer promotions or significant opportunities for professional growth. Two staff members are heading back to school to complete advanced degrees: Nadia Munk will complete her Master of Classical Civilization in London, England, and Eugene Henry will earn his PhD in Wine History in Ottawa. Philipa Morosan, Vanessa Floras, Emma Smith and Laura Vlahos are moving on to positions that will allow them to experience teaching at different independent or public schools; in a similar vein, Will Salvarinas and Kara Gani are moving out of the city to experience a different lifestyle (Will in Ontario and Kara in British Columbia). I thank all of these staff members for their time and dedication to Greenwood and our students, and I wish them all exciting next chapters and new adventures.

This summer, demolition may commence on our newly acquired properties south of Greenwood, and we are eager to get construction underway for our Campus expansion that includes a playing field, and green spaces with an ice hockey rink for the winter months. We have included the information about the public meeting on July 6 in the June 21 edition of Life @ Greenwood if anyone would like to attend. Once we have more information from City planning we will provide an update on the timing of the construction.

There is much to look forward to in the coming school year. We will continue our purposeful work towards becoming a recognized leader in providing an inclusive, customized, engaging and character-building experience for our students. Until then, it’s time for our students to rest and relax. I hope your family has many opportunities to spend quality time with each other, try something new, and enjoy all that our Canadian summer has to offer over the next couple of months.

Thank you to our Board of Directors, staff members, students and families for a wonderful year. Have a GREAT summer!

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
